Monetization: A Rant

This is not the pets.com era. This is also not 2006. Entering the market with the statement of “we’re focusing on users, then figuring out the model later” is the wrong answer.

Twitter could do that. It was probably the last major property to be able to do so. Twitter also started a long time before 2012.

You have a responsibility to your investors to make them money. If your investors are feeding you full of “we don’t care about the return, just get users” then you have crap investors.

No investors yet? Then you have a responsibility to your team to feed them and their families.

Not in The Valley? Then you have to work even harder. Stop taking your funding for granted. That’s not your personal play stash.

This is 2012. Profit isn’t easy. Not revenue. Revenue isn’t exceptionally hard. Profit is hard. Figure it out fast, or die.
